A few miles south of Areopolis the ground opens into one of the strangest places in the Peloponnese. Around five thousand metres of cave have been opened up so far, and a good part of the visit is made by boat, along an underground river that runs through the rock.
What you see down there
Stalagmites and stalactites fill the chambers, some of them close enough to the water to touch. The scale is hard to judge from photographs. It is cool underground even in August, which makes it a good middle-of-the-day trip when the coast is at its hottest.
Older than almost anything else here
The caves were used as a place of worship in Palaeolithic and Neolithic times, which puts them thousands of years ahead of the castles and churches that most visitors come to the Mani to see.
It is a short drive from the studios, and easily combined with a morning in Areopolis.
