Areopolis is the nearest town of any size, eleven kilometres from Oitylo, and the one you will end up in for anything you have forgotten to pack.
Worth the trip for the food alone
The tavernas here cook the way the region has always cooked, and the bread is still baked in wood ovens. Whatever is growing locally that month is what turns up on the plate.
A place to walk around
The old stone streets and the towers above them make it one of the most photographed villages in the Mani, and it holds its history plainly rather than dressing it up for visitors.
It also makes the obvious first stop on the way down to the Diros caves.
